This workshop gave students their first complete Internet of Things build — from a sensor on the bench to live data on a phone screen.
What the session covered
- What IoT is and where it is used: smart homes, agriculture and industry
- Getting started with the ESP32 and the Arduino IDE
- Reading temperature and humidity sensors
- Sending data to the cloud with MQTT and viewing it on a dashboard
Hands-on activity
Each team built a mini weather station on an ESP32 and published readings to a live dashboard, then added a relay to switch an LED lamp remotely from their phones.
Outcome
Students saw a full IoT system working end to end and gained ideas for their semester and final-year projects.
